Walking over seven hills – the infrastructure of Lisbon
The “City of the seven hills” is also the country’s largest city, the main hub of the Portuguese railway network and the economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon is home to the largest and most important port, the seat of government, as well as the highest state and government authorities. The city is connected to global air traffic via Humberto Delgado Lisbon International Airport, just 6 kilometres from the city centre. The south side of the Tejo can be easily reached by ferry to Almada or over the impressive 2287 metre long bridge “Ponte 25 de Abril” – by car or train. Adjacent to Lisbon is the A1 motorway, which takes about three hours by car to reach the country’s second most important centre – the city of Porto. Driving a car throughout Lisbon is a nerve-wracking ordeal – especially for newcomers. In the historical districts of the city, it quickly becomes apparent that the winding narrow streets were once built for horse carriages, but not for cars. To say the least, the parking space is insufficient. If possible, use taxis, tuk tuks or public transport. A trip with the legendary tram or cable car is always worthwhile. With the subway you can reach your destination quickly, but without a beautiful view. However, if you walk, you will see the city from its most beautiful side. Lisbon should be conquered by walking. Both, Lisboetas and visitors enjoy an extensive stroll.
As colorful as the Azulejos – Lisbon’s quarters
The beautiful old town of Alfama was almost spared by the devastating earthquake in 1755. Thus, Lisbon’s characteristic steep streets, colorful tile mosaics on the walls and the oldest preserved landmarks of the city – among them many popular sights, sacral buildings and monuments – are located here. However, the living quarters from the past days are too small, dark, angled or simply too old.
During the day, Bairro Alto looks like a quiet, dignified old town – only residents and suppliers are allowed to drive on the streets. Only when it gets dark does the popular nightlife area come to life. Amidst countless stylish boutiques and designer shops, traditional bars, classic Fado clubs, hip discos and trendy restaurants, the artery of Portuguese nightlife pulsates – often until the early hours of the morning. Many young urban people live here and enjoy it. The do not let themselves be disturbed by the hustle and bustle every evening.
In contrast to Alfama, the Baixa district was completely destroyed by the disastrous earthquake in the 18th century – and rebuilt from scratch. That is why the heart of the capital city has a modern appearance: with straight streets and houses arranged like chessboards. The wide streets with the Calcada Portuguesa – artfully paved with black basalt and white limestone – are unmistakable for the elegant quarter. It offers a unique architecture with a special atmosphere: magnificent squares and impressive triumphal arches, lined by numerous shops, charming cafés and restaurants. Baixa is considered a priviledged residential area: Whoever lives here can afford it.
There is still more sophistication: the noble quarter of Chiado is one of Lisbon’s absolute top locations – real estate is traded here at top prices. While the Jet Set goes shopping in the Rua Garett, one of Portugal’s most expensive shopping streets, the intellectual and art-loving elite meet in one of the popular street cafés – for example the legendary Café a Brasileira. In 1989 many historic buildings in Chiado were destroyed by a major fire. The architect Alvaro Joachim de Melo Siza Vieira was then commissioned to rebuild Chiado. Ten years later he was awarded the Pritzker Prize for outstanding architectural innovations for his visionary implementation. Chiado is mainly called home by well-off Lisboners.
On the sunny side - between joie de vivre and quality of life
For centuries many ships around the globe have set sail from the former flourishing seafaring town on the Bay of the Tejo – now millions of visitors from all over the world come here every year. Reasons for this are not only tourist attractions, but also international fairs and events of the extra class. Lisbon is regarded worldwide as a dynamic cultural city of joie de vivre. Apart from a breathtaking coastline and a multitude of beautiful sandy beaches, Lisbon also offers a broad sports program and the world-class stadiums “Estadio da Luz” and “José-Alvalade” where top sporting events take place.
Especially immigrants from other European countries would like to live and work in Lisbon – even though the bureaucratic paths are sometimes long and difficult. Lisboners who choose to live in Lisbon usually get in touch quickly: the locals are known for their open-minded way of life and hospitality. The metropolitan area of Lisbon is one of the most prosperous and economically strong regions in Portugal and is home to the country’s most important educational institutions and universities.
