Wissen- und Sehenswertes in Kaufbeuren
Shaped by the medieval townscape, many places in Kaufbeuren bear witness to its important history, in which the town was privileged by Rudolf I of Habsburg as a free imperial city in 1286 and was granted city rights by Ludwig IV in 1327. Kaufbeuren lost its status as a free imperial city in 1802. Since 1948, the city has been independent again - and today, with around 46,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in the administrative district of Swabia.
The historic old town center with the magnificent Kaiser-Max-Straße, an attractive pedestrian zone, idyllic squares and picturesque alleyways is always a special highlight for visitors and locals alike.
Cultural sights include the former city wall and its towers, the old town hall, the customs house, the Crescentia monastery, venerable churches and numerous other historical gems. The Kunsthaus with its changing exhibitions is also always worth a visit. Shopping enthusiasts will find a wide variety of specialist stores and well-known chain stores as well as a diverse range of restaurants and inviting cafés in Kaufbeuren's city center. There are also shopping centers and various services in the immediately adjacent inner city areas.
In contrast to the medieval town center, Kaufbeuren's largest district, Neugablonz, is only a few decades old. It was founded in 1946 by expelled Sudeten Germans from the district of Gablonz (northern Bohemia). It was home to the world-famous Gablonz glass and jewelry industry, from which a flourishing economic sector emerged.
Neugablonz became the center of the German costume jewelry industry and today occupies a special place in Germany's post-war history as a monument to the reconstruction efforts of displaced Germans. In keeping with the size of the district, Neugablonz has developed an attractive retail and gastronomy offering over the years, particularly around Neuer Markt, Gablonzer Haus and Sudetenstraße.
Another argument in favor of living in one of the most beautiful places in the Allgäu: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), Kaufbeuren
is the sunniest town in Germany with around 2,261 hours of sunshine (2020)!
