Balcony design - What type of balcony are you?
On warm and sunny days, our balconies are transformed into true oases of well-being and everyone uses and designs their balcony in a very individual way. Uses range from living room extensions to barbecue corners, green, garden-like oases with lots of plants, herb gardens and storage rooms or smoking corners.
Living room extension
A particularly popular idea is to transform the balcony into an outdoor living room. People spend a lot of time here, especially on sunny days and long evenings, and this is also reflected in the balcony design. Comfortable lounge landscapes, cozy cushions, fairy lights and additional poufs create a cosy atmosphere and convey the feeling of extending the living space outdoors.
Outdoor living
This type of balcony design is perfect for the always-outdoors type, who moves their living space almost completely outside in the summer months. This use is ideal for large balconies or roof terraces in particular. Depending on the size, the balcony can even be divided into different zones. In addition to the living room-like lounge area, a dining and cooking zone can be created, consisting of a dining table with chairs and a small outdoor kitchen. If there is still space left, the hot tub is also a popular highlight.
Green oasis of well-being
Here, the balcony is transformed into a small garden oasis with lots of plants and, depending on the size, a small piece of artificial/rolled turf, a sun lounger, parasol and, for example, a small fountain.
Herb gardens
In addition to using the balcony purely as a green feel-good paradise, many people use it as their own small fruit, vegetable or herb garden and grow a wide variety of vegetables and herbs in raised beds. In spring, seedlings are already piling up on windowsills and dressers. This balcony type loves to garden.
Balcony as additional storage space
In small apartments in particular, where living space is limited, some people create additional storage space via the balcony area.
For the practical type, the balcony serves as additional storage space or even a workshop. Comfort plays no role here. The balcony is used to dry laundry, store tools or carry out DIY projects. It is often used to store items that would otherwise have no place in the home.
The minimalist
The minimalist type keeps their balcony extremely simple. There are often only a few functional pieces of furniture, such as a small table with two chairs, and hardly any other decoration. The balcony is rarely used and often only serves as a place to smoke.
Before choosing an apartment, you should ask yourself what type of balcony you are. How important is being outside to you? Do you need a balcony at all and if so, how would you like to use it, what size and layout should it have?
For property owners and prospective buyers, the balcony also offers an opportunity to enhance, extend and customize the living space. Perhaps you will recognize yourself in one of the balcony types described and find new inspiration for the use of your own balcony.
